Motorcycle Insurance

Motorcycle insurance is specialty coverage designed to provide protection for a driver operating a motorcycle on the road. Some coverage is necessary to make the motorcycle legal for driving, and other policies are optional. Motorcycle owners will want to research the type of coverage best suited to individual circumstances and needs.
Types of Coverage:

  1. Liability Insurance: Covers costs related to damages caused by the motorcycle to another person or property. It does not usually pay for damages to the motorcycle.
  2. Collision Insurance: This policy compensates for damages to the motorcycle incurred during an accident, regardless of fault.
  3. Comprehensive Insurance: This coverage includes damages to the motorcycle caused by circumstances other than an accident, such as theft, storm damage, fire or vandalism.
  4. Uninsured Motorist Coverage: This provisional coverage serves to protect the driver and passengers from damage or injury caused by another motorist who is either uninsured or underinsured.

If an accident occurs, information pertaining to the events should be written down immediately. Document the names, addresses and contact information of people involved or people who witnessed the accident. Include detailed information about the vehicles, license plate numbers and insurance information for the other motorists involved in the accident. Take photos of the damage and of the location of the accident.

Authorities should be contacted as soon as possible to begin the process of filing a report or for administering medical care to any injured parties. A police report can prove useful in filing a claim with the insurance company. Any medical bills should also be documented and made available to the insurer. Once the information is collected, a claim can be filed to seek compensation for damages.

Motorcycle insurance meets certain state laws to make the bike legal for the road. Additional coverage protects against the financial impact of an accident. Coverage can be tailored to fit the owner’s needs and expectations of use. Thus, some research can indicate acceptable coverage so the motorcycle can be driven with the knowledge that measures have been taken to preserve responsible driving.
